My education kicked off in a regular school with speech and hearing support. Yet, it was the discovery of cultural accessibility that truly broadened my horizons. There, I saw the most diverse group of Deaf people. They varied in race, language, and communication. All shared the same spaces. It was beautiful and transformative.
By 15, I switched to a Deaf school, boosting my multiple identities. There, I gained better language access and a stronger self-identity. Yet, as a fan of Nancy Drew, R.L. Stine, and The Baby-Sitters Club, I felt a void. None of the characters mirrored me, my way of communicating, or my challenges.
